Here’s everything you need to paint over your acrylic nails:
- Acetone-Free Nail Polish Remover
- Cuticle Pusher
- Baby Wipes
- Acrylic Friendly Base Coat
- UV Lamp
- Your Favorite Colored Regular Nail Polish
- Top Coat
One thing to remember is that regular nail polish won’t last long on the acrylic nails. No matter how strong of a top coat you use, the lifespan of regular nail polish isn’t longer than a week.
1. Remove the Nail Polish From Your Acrylics
Before painting your acrylic nails, you have to remove the previous color. Skip this step if the acrylic nails are clear. If you already have gel polish over acrylic nails, remove it with a nail drill.
If your acrylic nails are already coated in regular polish, use nail polish remover to get rid of it. Go for an acetone-free formula. Acetone-free nail polish removers are weak and don’t melt the acrylics.
Acetone removers react with the acrylics and dissolve them. However, if you decide to use acetone removers, work quickly! Don’t allow any time for the acetone to dissolve the acrylic nails.
2. Push the Cuticles Back
After removing the nail polish, push the cuticles back with a cuticle pusher. This will allow the nail polish to evenly spread to the cuticle area as well. Otherwise, it will sit on top of the cuticles.
3. Clean the Acrylics
Use baby wipes to clean your acrylic nails before painting them. Cleaning the nails provides a smooth surface. It also clears out the smell of nail polish remover that might stay on the acrylics after removing the nail polish.
4. Apply a Base Coat
Painting the acrylic nails directly with regular nail polish will stain them. Applying a base coat before the nail polish prevents staining.
Base coats will also provide a smooth surface for the nail polish. Otherwise, the polish won’t spread evenly and form lumps on your nails.
Note: Go for acrylic-friendly base coats instead of strengthening and revitalizing ones. You are putting the base coat on the acrylic nails so strengthening properties won’t benefit your natural nails in any way.
5. Apply the Nail Polish
Choose your nail polish color and apply it to your acrylics. You might have to apply more than one coat. Going for a darker shade is better if you truly want the color to show up on the acrylics.
6. Apply a Top Coat
Applying a topcoat will keep your regular nail polish intact for several days. It adds shine to your nails and makes them look beautiful.

Reasons Not to Paint Acrylic Nails With Regular Nail Polish
Painting acrylic nails with regular nail polish isn’t the best idea due to various reasons. You won’t get a long-lasting manicure by using regular nail polish over acrylics. Here are all the reasons why!
1. Regular Nail Polish Requires Frequent Repainting
Acrylic nails last 4-6 weeks. You need to refill after a minimum of 2 weeks. People get acrylic nails so they don’t have to visit a nail salon every other day to paint their nails. Using regular nail polish over acrylics is going to ruin this purpose.
Regular nail polish is prone to chipping off from the acrylics easily. Even if you use a top coat, regular nail polish won’t last more than a week. (that too if you are lucky, otherwise it will chip off within 5 days)
2. Creates Lumps in Acrylic Nails
The chemical composition of acrylic nails and regular nail polish is entirely different. Painting the acrylics with regular nail polish results in a lumpy application. You won’t be able to get rid of the lumps even after removing the nail polish.
Note: Applying a base coat on acrylic nails before using regular nail polish can help with this problem, but some chances of lumps are still there. (especially if the base coat isn’t high-quality)
Painting acrylic nails with regular nail polish is a quick and easy way to change their color. It is inexpensive and you can experiment with mixing different colors, however, it isn’t long-lasting.
Avoid using acetone remover on the acrylics before painting them. Make sure to use a base coat to prevent staining the acrylics and top it off with a top coat. Otherwise, regular nail polish will chip off within a day.
You can also use gel polish on the acrylics but removing it would be a bit harder. If you haven’t got your acrylic nails done, you may want to go for gel nails, since there are some advantages of gel polish compared acrylic nails.
